There are two prominent schools of Thai Buddhist Pāli Chanting: Saṁyoga (Saṁyok = สงั โยชน)์ and the Magadha (Makhot = ภาษามคธ) styles of pronunciation and melodies. The UBOM Pāli Chanting self-learning course primarily focuses on the Makhot or the Dhammayut style of chanting. Below, we present the four simple steps to master Thai Dhammayut Pāli Chanting at your convenience:
Begin by reading the two pages of the pronunciation manual found in the Palelai Buddhist Temple Chanting Book (page vii to viii) or the Mandarin version of the Santi Forest Monastery Chanting Book (morning chanting page 115 to 118).
To master Thai Dhammayut Pāli Chanting, it is essential to be able to pronounce each Pāli vowel, consonant, syllable, and their combinations with the various Thai alphabet built-in tones. Therefore, we have prepared a series of 35 pronunciation audio files for you to train with. Simply listen and chant along to enhance your skills.
Once you have mastered the pronunciations in step 2, we recommend incorporating audio files 36 to 71 follow by morning and evening chanting into your practice using the provided audio files.
We strongly encourage you to join the Pāli Chanting group led by Ajahn Ong Cittasaṁvaro for personalized guidance and instruction.
By following these steps, you will be well on your way to becoming proficient in Thai Dhammayut Pāli Chanting. Embrace the opportunity to learn at your own pace and in your preferred environment.
